*NOTE TO EBAY - THESE BOXES ARE EMPTY AND DO NOT CONTAIN ANY RESTRICTED AMMUNITION COMPONENTS* Up for your consideration is a set of two empty reproduction CALIBER .30 M22 BALL FRANGIBLE 20 round ammunition cartons with a TWIN CITIES ORDNANCE PLANT label. The Frangible-type round grew out of a request from the Army Air Forces for a special type of ammunition that could be used in advanced gunnery training. This request resulted in the development of a .30 caliber round that had a bullet made of a lead powder and bakelite combination, fired from a modified machine gun at an armored P-63 Kingcobra aircraft. The training program began in mid-1944 at all of the aerial gunnery schools and was known as "Operation Pinball". The initial production of the T44-designated round was undertaken by Frankford Arsenal and Western Cartridge Company in the summer of 1944, followed by St. Louis and Lake City Ordnance Plants. Later, in the spring of 1945, with the increased demand for the frangible round, production was started at the Twin Cities and Des Moines Ordnance Plants. Also at this time, the T44 was adopted as the M22, with production ending in the fall of 1945. Each "Buy It Now" single purchase is for 2 unassembled cartons with dividers and TWIN CITIES M22 BALL FRANGIBLE label, with a hand-stamped lot number matching my original.
